Water Quality

In addition to the Overview information provided for Water Quality, the Agriculture and Wastewater Workgroups have described their priorities and progress in the tabs below. Other important work is being conducted by the Chesapeake Bay Program partnership to restore water quality by implementing pollution reduction practices on urban and suburban lands and reducing pollution deposited in the watershed from the air. Additional information on these efforts will be included over time. Progress in implementing the Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) and in achieving milestones set at the 2009 Executive Council Meeting is also described below.

Performance Assessment

Starting with the 2010 Bay Barometer to be released in 2011, the Bay Barometer will track progress toward meeting TMDL allocations for agriculture and other source sectors. Acres of BMPs implemented dating back to 1985 can be compared to the levels implemented in 2009 under Current Efforts.

BMP Assessment

The BMPs identified by the Agriculture Workgroup as priority for review have been divided into three priority tiers. The Watershed Technical Workgroup and Agriculture Workgroup will complete the review process for the first two tiers of BMPs by the end of 2012, while the third tier will be reviewed in time to be included in the 2017 model. The status of each BMP is reflected in the following table and will be updated on a regular basis.

* Existing BMPs have already been approved through the Chesapeake Bay Program Protocol, and the partnership seeks to revisit the definition and/or load reduction efficiencies. Interim BMPs were included in jurisdictions' Phase I WIPs as "interim, placeholder BMPs," and EPA granted interim definitions and efficiencies for modeling the load reductions associated with WIP strategies. Interim BMPs must be formally approved through the Protocol before jurisdictions can receive credit for them in annual progress runs. New BMPs have not been through the protocol or included in Phase I WIPs. They represent additional BMPs that the partnership wishes to include in the Chesapeake Bay Program modeling tools.
